Wellington sealed three-wicket win over Otago in HRV Cup thriller
Wellington prevailed in its last league game of the 2010-11 HRV Cup against Otago by three wickets with a ball to spare at the Queenstown Events Centre on Wednesday, December 29. Whilst Wellington was chasing
148 to win, both the sides had to wait till the penultimate ball of the match before the Firebirds sealed the thriller adding four points to their points table.
Wellington’s run chase went off to a shaky start, as they lost two early wickets with only 17 on the board. Opener Michael Pollard was out for a duck on the very first ball he faced (McMillan) while no. 3
batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Derek-de-Boorder-c1359 caught him behind the stumps off James McMillan. Despite losing the two early wickets, the Firebirds managed to keep the required run rate under control.
Pollard’s opening partner http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Grant-c60671 Elliot. The partnership reached an end when the fluent opener was run out on Stevens’ throw while
taking a careless run. Parlane scored 34 runs from 29 balls, hitting three boundaries and one six.
Parlane’s dismissal took the England import Luke Wright to the crease who took charge after Elliot was caught by Aaron Redmond off Nick Beard at 29 (off 25 balls). Wright shared useful stands with wicketkeeper-batsman
Chris Nevin and Marc Calkin to take the side to 118 in the 17th over. But Houghton’s wicket on the first ball of the penultimate over suddenly shifted momentum in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wellington-c864 was still 14 runs away from the winning line with just
11 balls and three wickets in hand. In walked the Australian pacer Brett Lee hitting a six to take some pressure off his side. Calkin and Lee finished the match in Wellington’s favour with a ball to spare and three wickets intact.
James McMillan and Aaron Redmond finished with two wickets apiece from 3 and 2 overs respectively while http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chris-Nash-c1247 shared one wicket.
Otago’s 146 had a major contribution from opener Aaron Redmond, who scored his seventh Twenty20 half-century from 37 deliveries. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Craig-Cumming-c1289, the Otago skipper managed a quick 25 in the middle-order before
Iain Robertson’s unbeaten 20 in the end took the side to 147 for 8 at the end of their allotted 20 overs. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Harry-Boam-c1536 and Jeetan Patel picked up two wickets each.
