Wellington were in a good position against Northern Districts at the end of day-one of the Plunket Shield test match being played at Cobham Oval, Whangarei in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754. Wellington had amassed 227 runs for the loss of 5 wickets.
The toss was won by the Northern Districts captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Marshall-c1650, who elected to field first. The wicket had some moisture underneath it, but it was expected to ease out over the course of the match.
The start to the Wellington innings was not an ideal one, as they lost a couple of quick wickets. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Cameron-Merchant-c1216 was the first man to be dismissed after adding just nine runs to the total.
The fall of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Grant-c60671 Elliot to the crease. However, the first-drop batsman failed to make an impression, as he was sent back to the pavilion after scoring just one run.
Wellington were 10 for 2, and they needed a solid effort from their opening batsman Stephen Murdoch and the middle-order player http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Neal-Parlane-c2087. The pair didn’t disappoint as they amassed a 144 run partnership for the third wicket. They steadied the innings,
playing sensible cricket. Parlane got out after scoring 58 runs from 177 balls.
Michael Pollard wasn’t able to trouble the bowlers much, as he only managed five runs in his innings. He failed to capitalise on the platform laid by Murdoch and Parlane.
Wellington suffered a bigger blow, when they lost their well set opening batsman. Murdoch got out after constructing a brilliant innings of 86 runs off 243 balls.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Joe-Austin-Smellie-c1709 batted out the remaining session, making sure that their team doesn’t lose more wickets in the day. Rhodes was unbeaten on 17 whereas; Austin-Smellie was batting on 27.
The bowlers did a good job for Northern Districts, but they would have liked to take a few more wickets before the end of the day’s play. The conditions were not ideal for batting in the first couple of hours, but the bowlers weren’t able to make the most
of them.
