Twin centuries, from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JD-Ryder-c1679, put the Wellington Firebirds in a dominant position on the second day of their ongoing Plunket Shield match against the Central Districts Stags, played at the Karori Park in Wellington, today on December
11. However, the Stags managed to bowl the Firebirds out and proceeded to catch up to their hosts, trailing by just 45 runs, with 9 wickets still in hand by stumps on day two.
The match had kicked off on December 10 with Wellington winning the toss and choosing to field first. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mark-Gillespie-c1904 (11-2-56-3) and Scott Kuggeleijn (10-1-53-3) proceeded to wreak havoc on the Stags’ batsmen, with the help of Chris Woakes (14.1-3-51-2).
While most of the batsmen failed to make much of an impact, and three were dismissed on duck, Will Young drove the innings with his vital 121. The Stags had managed to work their way up to 260 before they were all out on the first day of play.
The Firebirds wasted no time, and commenced their first innings at a brisk pace. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Stephen-Joseph-Murdoch-c91153 (1) early, but Jesse Ryder and Michael Papps dug their heels in – the former reached triple
figures, while the latter scored a half-ton, and by stumps on day one, both were unbeaten, and had gotten Wellington up to 176 for 2.
Day two saw Ryder (162) and Papps (117) racking up massive individual totals – in addition, their partnership swelled to a 256-run stand for the third wicket, and got the team total up to 271. Ryder was the first to go on day two, caught out by AY http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Huzefa-Mohammed-Patel-c63657
off http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JEC-Franklin-c1684 followed suit soon after, dismissed by Lamb (20-4-76-3) after a mere 2-run contribution.
Alongside Lamb, AY Patel (21-3-62-3) was among the more destructive bowlers, and succeeded in removing both Grant Elliott (9) and finally Papps. Wicketkeeper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Carl-Cachopa-c49207, after which AY Patel completed this three-wicket
haul by sweeping Scott Kuggeleijn off the pitch on duck.
By this point, the team’s innings appeared to be tapering down, but Woakes (41) and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JS-Patel-c1747 (40*) put in an extra effort near the end, establishing a 75-run ninth-wicket stand. However, Woakes, and his successor Mark Gillespie (2) were both eventually
snapped up by Roald Badenhorst (12-3-44-2), and the Firebirds found themselves all out at 403, with a 143-run lead.
The Stags’ skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jeet-Raval-c1685 (35*). The skipper was dismissed by Gillespie, but Raval and Roald Badenhorst (8*) held firm, and got the team up to 98 for 1
by stumps on day two.
