Wellington v Central Districts – Plunket Shield, 2012/13 – Match Recap [Day 3] – Wellington trailing by 194, with 7 wickets remaining
Having set the Wellington Firebirds a final target of 247 to chase, the Central Districts Stags’ Andrew Lamb and Peter Trego proceeded to make early dents in the Firebirds’ batting order, reducing them to 53 for 3 by stumps on the third day of their ongoing
Plunket Shield match, played today on December 12, at the Karori Park in Wellington.
The first day of play had seen the Firebirds’ http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mark-Gillespie-c1904 (11-2-56-3), Scott Kuggeleijn (10-1-53-3), and Chris Woakes (14.1-3-51-2) teaming up to limit the Stags to a first innings total of 260, despite a valiant performance from centurion Will Young
(121).
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wellington-c864 had then gone on to put forth a superb batting display during their first innings, with Jesse Ryder (162) and Michael Papps (117) starring for the team, while Woakes (41) and Jeetan Patel (40*) played supporting roles.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Central-Districts-c777’ Andrew Lamb (20-4-76-3), AY Patel (21-3-62-3), and Roald Badenhorst (12-3-44-2) attempted to rein in the Firebirds’ batsmen, but the hosts succeeded in posting a final total of 403 before they were all out. The Stags then stepped up to
bat, and after skipper Jamie How’s (51) dismissal at the hands of Gillespie, with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jeet-Raval-c1685 and Roald Badenhorst at the crease, the team finished at 98 for 1 by stumps.
Day three saw the partnership between Raval (74) and Badenhorst (36) yielding 77 runs, and getting the team up to 166 before Franklin (20-3-71-4) and Jeetan Patel (29-8-66-3) began their strike. Franklin picked up Raval, while http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Huzefa-Mohammed-Patel-c63657 took care of Badenhorst
5 overs later. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MS-Sinclair-c2029 (5) and Will Young (0) were both disappointing, with the former bowled by Franklin, while the latter fell prey to Patel, leaving the team at 194 for 5 by the 71st over.
However, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kruger-van-Wyk-c1811 (41) resuscitated the innings in a big way, setting up a 109-run partnership for the 6th wicket, which got the team total up to 303 from 194. Both batsmen were eventually dismissed by Franklin, followed
swiftly by AY Patel (7), who was trapped lbw by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JS-Patel-c1747.
However, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Robert-Lamb-c44584 (10) provided the team an extra burst at the end, and after the departure of both batsmen, off Chris Woakes (23.4-5-84-2), the Stags finished all out at 389.
Trego and Lamb then joined forces to put the Firebirds on the back-foot as they commenced their 247-run chase. Opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Stephen-Joseph-Murdoch-c91153 (2) packing. By stumps
on day three, with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Michael-Papps-c1961 (19*) and Scott Kuggeleijn (8*) at the crease, the Firebirds finished at 53 for 3 – trailing by 194, with 7 wickets still remaining.
