http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Central-Districts-c777 – Plunket Shield, 2012/13 – Match Update [Day 1] – All-round Wellington Firebirds trail by 84 runs by stumps
Displaying prowess with both bat and ball, the Wellington Firebirds succeeded in keeping the Central Districts Stags under their control on the first day of their ongoing Plunket Shield match, at the Karori Park in Wellington today on December 10, and were trailing by just 84 runs by stumps.
Having won the toss and chosen to field first, the Firebirds’ http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mark-Gillespie-c1904 (11-2-56-3), Scott Kuggeleijn (10-1-53-3), and Chris Woakes (14.1-3-51-2) all joined forces to keep the Stags’ batsmen in check.
Gillespie struck early, and sent top-order batsmen http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JM-How-c1707 managed a 45-run contribution, in addition to teaming up with Mathew Sinclair (16) for a 35-run partnership for the third wicket.
Sinclair was snapped up by Woakes in the 12th over, but his successor Will Young anchored the innings with a steady 121. How was only able to join him for a 45-run stand before he fell prey to Elliott, but Young and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kruger-van-Wyk-c1811 (17) teamed up for a 62-run stand for the fifth wicket.
Their combined efforts got the Stags’ total up to 165, after which http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Huzefa-Mohammed-Patel-c63657 were both sent packing on duck, while Andrew Lamb managed a mere 7-run contribution.
Young’s dismissal, at the hands of Woakes, left http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-William-Mathieson-c44639 (2*) alone at the crease, and the Stags were bowled, on the first day, for a first innings total of 260.
The Firebirds did not stop there, and proceeded to even out the difference between both teams to a considerable degree before play came to an end on the first day. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JD-Ryder-c1679 (108*) proved major forces to contend with.
By stumps on day two, both batsmen remained unbeaten, and their 161*-run partnership got the team total up to 176 for 2 – trailing by 84 runs, with 8 wickets remaining.
