Wellington v Northern Districts – Plunket Shield, 2012/13 – Match Update [Day 1] – Tim Southee dominates with all-round performance
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wellington-c864 Firebirds to 32 for
4 on the first day of their ongoing Plunket Shield match, played today on December 17 at the Karori Park in Wellington.
The http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JS-Patel-c1747 (27-7-102-3) and Scott Kuggeleijn (16.1-2-92-2) both made valiant attempts to keep the Knights’ batsmen under control, and while they had them at 161 for 6 at one
point, the Northern Districts received salvation from unexpected quarters.
The top and most of the middle order remained disappointing. Opening batsman and skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Joseph-Yovich-c1735 failed to make much of an impression with his
solitary 44, sent packing by Kuggeleijn in the 17th over.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Marshall-c1650 (12) up as his third wicket of the day, the Knights were
at 161, and had 6 batsmen down.
However, coming in at number 8, Southee revived the innings to great effect, with his 156 off 130 deliveries, including 6 sixes, and 18 fours. His partnership with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Daryl-Mitchell-c52533 (43) yielded 166 runs for the 7th wicket, and after the latter’s
dismissal at the hands of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Graeme-Aldridge-c1502 (35*).
Southee was eventually dislodged by Kuggeleijn, but by then the Knights had made significant progress, and the combined efforts of Aldridge and Ish Sodhi (4*) got the team up to a first innings total of 403 for 8, after which they decided to declare.
Southee (5-0-16-4) remained on the attack, and claimed 4 early wickets to put the Firebirds at a significant disadvantage. Top-order batsmen http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Michael-Papps-c1961 (15), and skipper Steven Murdoch (2), all fell prey to the young pacer, as did hard-hitter
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JD-Ryder-c1679 (0). By stumps on day one, with Kuggeleijn (8*) and Grant Elliott (1*) at the crease, Wellington finished at a shaky 32 for 4.
