Wellington v Northern Districts – Plunket Shield, 2012/13 – Match Update – Northern Districts claim 6-wicket victory
Kane Williamson’s unbeaten century set the Northern Districts Knights up for a 6-wicket victory over the Wellington Firebirds, in their Plunket Shield match played at the Karori Park in Wellington, from December 17 to 20.
The Knights won the toss and chose to bat first, after which their batsmen went on to make a strong statement, despite the efforts put in by the Firebirds’ Jeetan Patel (27-7-102-3) and Scott Kuggeleijn (16.1-2-92-2) to contain them. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Joseph-Yovich-c1735 (44) and
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Graeme-Aldridge-c1502 (35*) that propelled the team towards a solid first innings total, leading them to eventually
declare at 403.
The Firebirds carried their spiritless performance into their batting, and their first innings served as nothing more than a chance for the Knights’ http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Michael-Papps-c1961 (15),
Kuggeleijn (10), and Grant Elliott (16) were the only batsmen in the earlier stages of the innings who managed to reach double figures, and while Luke Ronchi (113) and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wellington-c864
were eventually bowled for a meagre first innings total of 206.
Asked to follow on, the Firebirds stepped up to the crease for a second time, and managed a marginally better performance. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Luke-Ronchi-c73300 (108) made commendable attempts to steer his team in the right direction, and contributed another century. He was joined
in his efforts by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Luke-Woodcock-c1860 (49), Kuggeleijn (83), and Dane Hutchinson (45), but Ish Sodhi (35.1-2-128-5), Arnel (20-2-89-2), and Southee (25-6-75-2) proved too potent a force to deal with. The Firebirds found themselves bowled at 390,
setting the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Knights-c805 a final target of 194 to chase.
More than half the chase was completed by centurion Williamson (121*), who was supported largely by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Northern-Districts-c825 Knights up to 196 with ease, going on to clinch a 6-wicket win over Wellington.
