Wellman undecided over In Lingerie’s Breeders’ Cup race
The 3-year-old Empire Maker filly, In Lingerie, won a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” challenge race for the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic when the Todd Pletcher trained filly went all the way in Keeneland’s 7 October, 2012, Grade 1 Juddmonte Spinster Stakes at about 1 1/8 miles over the venue’s synthetic surface.
In Lingerie will leave on a jet plane from Kentucky to California and head to Santa Anita Park to take part in the Breeders’ Cup World Championships next month.
That mush is decided that In Lingerie will run in the Breeders’ Cup, but according to the president of the Eclipse Thoroughbred, Aron Wellman, who campaigns In Lingerie in partnership with Gary Barber, he is not sure which race to choose for Kentucky bred filly.
The Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic is there, but Wellman is looking for something different as well, to keep their options on the table before pointing out one.
"I would have to say that the top two choices would be the Ladies' Classic and the Filly and Mare Turf (gr. IT), in no particular order," Wellman said. "And then there are a couple others that may come into play as well. It will be sort of a team decision between myself, my partner Gary Barber, and (her multiple Eclipse Award-winning trainer) Todd Pletcher, of course. The Breeders' Cup rules are pretty generous now. You can actually apply that credit that you've earned as a result of the "Win and You're In" for the Ladies' Classic to any race, so that's pretty nice."
If In Lingerie goes with the current race listed for her, the Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic, she will meet a deep field with exceptional talent, the likes of Royal Delta, My Miss Aurelia, Questing, and Awesome Feather.
Wellman said they are not shying away from the challenge, but their versatile filly has the ability to fit in different races, and her tremendous stamina can expose many out there.
With the Spinster victory, In Lingerie has propelled herself back to championship consideration, and if she goes on to win a Breeders’ Cup race, than that will get her into the championship talk affirmatively.
