Wells Fargo Championship: Gary Woodland out, Russell Knox in – Golf News
Gary Woodland has pulled out of the published field of this week’s Wells Fargo Championship set to be played at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte.
Woodland injured his left wrist during the third round of the Masters Tournament. However, he continued playing the 18 holes on the third day and declared his withdrawal in the evening.
That is the reason why he has again announced his withdrawal from the tournament, slated to start from Thursday, May 3, 2012.
According to him, he wants to give his wrist some time to heal completely so that he can participate in the Players Championship with full fitness.
He told that he had a thorough check-up recently and the doctors gave him the all-clear so that he would play the game. Yet, he believes that an extra week will help him rely on his wrist in the upcoming tournaments.
Throughout the 2012 PGA Tour season, Woodland has not been able to improve his game with the clubs.
In the nine starts he has made so far, he has succeeded in making only one top-25 finish; 24th in the Hyundai Tournament of Champions.
He was tied for the first place in the Tavistock Cup; however, it was not an official PGA Tour event.
Therefore, he now looks forward to returning to the game at the Players Championship, and is aiming to improve his score on the Tour.
In the meantime, Scotland’s Russell Knox has been inducted in the field as the first substitute.
Knox has played a total of nine events on the PGA Tour this season. However, he has not been able to impress the golf fans, as he only succeeded in making the cut thrice.
His best finish came in the Mayakoba Golf Classic and Zurich Classic of New Orleans, in which, he tied for the 30th place each time.
The Valero Texas Open was the other tournament, in which, he made the cut and finished tied for the 41st place on the leaderboard.
Therefore, it will be a difficult tournament for him to contend because of the presence of elite players in the field.
The four top-10 ranked players confirmed to tee off on Thursday are:
Rory McIlroy (2),
Lee Westwood (3),
Hunter Mahan (5) and
Tiger Woods (7).
