Wells Fargo Championship helps boost Charlotte’s economy – Golf News
The local economy of Charlotte is going to get a massive boost from the Wells Fargo Championship, a profile event that attracts leading golf players, such as Tiger Woods, from all over the world.
Local tourism and services industries are going to be the biggest beneficiaries of the increased economic activity during the event.
Tourists from all over the United States, Canada and other countries, join the local spectators to watch the game and their favourite star players.
Services related to tourism and other segments of the economy are generated at a massive scale, offering temporary employment opportunities to local work force.
The event also helps in establishment of business outlets in the food, entertainment, tourism, cultural and related industries.
On the opening day of the tournament, Woods was not among the low scorers of the event. Yet, he was being followed rigorously by his fans on the course, wearing the same shirt that he had on him.
According to the tournament organisers, the shirt was sold out in just 45 minutes after it was placed at the club’s souvenir shop. Each shirt was priced at $90.
"We had no idea he was going to wear that shirt," said Nike Apparel Rep Jeff Burkey. "The color he wore is sold out".
The level of crowd coming to the course is simply a positive sign for the huge success of the tournament this year.
It is estimated that the economy of Charlotte would benefit by $45 million this year due to staging this prestigious PGA Tour event.
"This afternoon we'll get a whole lot more when they're thirsty on their way home," said Rusty's Deli owner, Peter Estes.
Estes’ deli is around half a mile away from the venue of the tournament and he told that his business gets a huge boost each year during the event’s week.
"They ask me how long I've been here and I say '28 years,' and they say 'Oh, I never knew'".
He is not the only deli owner who is benefiting from the staging of the event in his area. In fact, other service providers such as training centres, clubs, and other entertainment centres also get some business from the event.
