The 2011 Wells Fargo Championship is set to take start from May 5th at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte North Carolina. Part of the PGA Tour, the Wells Fargo Championship has a total purse of $6,500,000. Being the luxurious event it is the championship
is also estimated to bring $18 million to Charlotte. This revenue would mainly be due to the food and hotel sales.
Approximately 35,000 spectators have purchased tickets for the tournament. Also, there will be 2,400 volunteers helping out in the various tasks in the tournament.
"I think it's a real tribute to the city of Charlotte and the whole region as to how well they support this event," said tournament director, Kym Hougham. "If this was our second year on the tournament, it would be pretty huge. But this is our ninth year.
We have a great field. The tournament is established. We're not just a golf tournament, we're an event.”
The Pro-am tournament will actually be starting on Monday as the professionals utilise all the time they can get on the course. On Tuesday there will be a Youth Exhibition at the Practice Tee featuring Charles Warren and Brad Faxon. Also, there is a Walk
the course against domestic Violence organized by the Avon Foundation. With more pro-am rounds taking place on Wednesday, the tournament will officially kick-off Thursday morning.
The tickets for the event have been sold out despite the famous Tiger Woods not taking part. Last year, Woods played this tournament in the midst of his personal problems and scandals. For this tournament, the fourteen times major championship winner has
opted out due to a knee injury. Such is this tournament’s popularity that it has sold out eight out of the nine years it has taken place.
The defending champion, Rory McIlroy, who won the tournament last year, will be there to defend his title. With just a margin of .01 point, McIlroy has surpassed Woods in the world rankings .The Irish golfer who suffered a horrible meltdown at the Masters
at Augusta is now ranked sixth in the world. With renewed hope and high spirits, McIlroy is hoping to do well in the Wells Fargo Championship.
