Welsh coach Warren Gatland denies Stephen Jones’ retirment speculation – Rugby News
The head coach of Wales, Warren Gatland, has turned down media reports about the retirement of Stephen Jones and said that he has not quit yet. Talking to reporters on November 22, Gatland told that Stephan Jones has not been included in his squad that will
face Wallabies on December 3, at Twickenham.
The 33-year-old fly-half failed to impress his boss despite having reasonable experience under his belt. Gatland has preferred Rhys Priestland and Dan Biggar over the seasoned playmaker for forthcoming test series.
Earlier, Stephan Jones was reported to have quit from international rugby after being left out by his coach but Gatland insisted that they have not received any confirmation yet in this regard. Jones is one of the most experienced players on the Wales squad
with 104 test caps. He started off his international journey with Wales in 1998 and has been representing his national side since more than a decade. During his career with his national side he has scored 917 points which is the second highest individual achievement
for Wales including a large number of tries.
He was included in Wales Rugby World Cup 2011 squad but was given only one opportunity in the global show. He made his maiden entry for his team during the semi-final contest against France as reserve player. Wales lost that match by a close margin of 8-7.
Talking about Stephan Jones, Gatland said that, “We know what Stephen can give us. This is a chance to give someone else an opportunity in the squad - and we all recognised how well Rhys Priestland played in the World Cup.”
He further said that, “This is a special game as we've had an opportunity to celebrate Shane Williams' career as he has announced his retirement. We will use this game to say thank you to Shane Williams for all he has given to Welsh rugby so that is quite
different to the situation that Stephen Jones is in.”
Meanwhile, Gatland has warned his players seeking overseas contracts and said that their efforts of playing for offshore clubs could hurt their international career.
