Welsh international centre Jamie Roberts stresses need to cut down on errors to enhance Wales performance
Welsh international Rugby Union player, Jamie Roberts, has stressed on the need for Wales t cut down “silly mistakes” to enhance their performance and consistency in their matches. Roberts
made these comments on Saturday, October 22 in an interview to BBC at the end of Wales’ relatively successful 2011 Rugby World Cup (RWC) campaign.
Roberts said, “We made too many simple errors and, at this level, errors like that will lose you games. There are no excuses. If we get things right we will put teams like this [Australia]
away.”
Wales finish the tournament fourth, following their Friday night defeat at the hands of the 2011 Tri Nations champions, Wallabies, in the Bronze medal play-off. Wales started their 2011 RWC
campaign in Pool D, which was also called the “pool of death”. Wales had to compete with the defending champions, Springboks, Samoa, Fiji and Namibia to progress to the knockout stages of the tournament.
Later in the knockout stage, the young Wales side defeated Ireland in their quarterfinal encounter. Commenting on their experience in the knockout stages of the tournament, Roberts said, “To
go from the elation of that Ireland [quarter-final] victory to events of the last two weeks has been emotionally very tough but that is the fine line at this level.”
However, due to some poor goal kicking and missing some crucial point scoring chances, Wales got defeated by France 9 – 8 in the semi-final, which was followed by 21 – 18 defeat by the hands
of Wallabies in the Bronze Medal match.
Roberts added that as result of the impressive performance during the RWC, they have built this feeling that they can play against the best teams of the Rugby Union and can beat them. He added
that although they have not beaten the Southern Hemisphere side in the New Zealand, yet their performance in the tournament will help them in their upcoming tours of the Southern Hemisphere.
In addition to Roberts, Wales’s forwards player Ryan Jones has also expressed his satisfaction on the performance of the team as a whole, and the way the young players have performed in the
squad.
