Welsh star Gavin Henson to miss out Rugby World Cup 2011 due to wrist injury - Rugby News
Welsh player Gavin Henson is likely to miss out the entire Rugby World 2011 due to a wrist injury he sustained during a warm-up clash against England on August 13. Henson has underwent a surgery after a devastating blow on his right wrist which will take
six to eight weeks to recover from and ultimately he will be forced to see the Rugby World 2011 on his TV set. Wales' national medical performance manager, Prav Mathema, confirmed the news about Henson’s surgery reports on August 14.
Wales managed to thump England in their second Rugby World Cup warm-up match by an impressive difference of 19-9 at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff but victory cost them two severe blows. Rhys Priestland was the other Welsh player who sustained a thigh injury
during the same match and will be assessed on Monday by the Welsh selectors for his selection in forthcoming RWC.
Talking to the reporters on Sunday, Prav Mathema said that Gavin Henson has put his future on stake and is feared to see the whole event while sitting out from the arena. The medical performance manager further said that, “Gavin
underwent surgery this morning [Sunday] at the Vale hospital, to correct the dislocation to a bone in his right wrist. He has been given a return to play time of six to eight weeks which, while ruling him out of selection for the initial squad, could see him
available to the coaches while we are still in the Pool stages of the tournament.”
Prav Mathema also added, “Gavin will remain under the care of the Wales national squad medical staff in order to ensure that he returns to fitness at the earliest opportunity in case the coaches need to call him out to New
Zealand.”
Gavin Henson’s injury has come out as another severe blow to Welsh Rugby Union for selecting their final squad for Rugby World Cup starting just three weeks later in New Zealand. The union has already been deprived of their
skipper Mathew Rees and Morgan Stoddart due to various injuries.
