Question:

Welterweights?

Margarito and Cotto scored impressive victories last night. With Mayweather taking some well deserved time off and looking for a rematch with De La Hoya, a Cotto/Margarito match up looks inevitable in the near future. Who do you think would win this matchup and why? Do you see Floyd mixing it up with either fighter in the future?

  1. cotto -margarito would be a great fight.i would have to give an edge to cotto.both fighters through alot of punches and are all bombs ,the fight could easily be a blood bath or stopped because of eyes swollen shut or something to that effect.as strong as margarito is i think cotto is stronger,i think they will meet more than once because it will be great fight.mayweather might face one of them because the public demand will be big enough and the money will be there.if cotto wins impressively i cant see floyd not fighting him, floyds ego is too big .

  2. Cotto will beat Margarito, Margarito is too easy to hit. Oscar doesn't get any younger so I will go with Floyd, he will defeat Oscar by decision again.

  3. Hey brent how are you doing? Well first of all Well i am a Floyd fan AND a Cotto fan so i try to be as neutral as possible. I think Cotto has a better chance at beating Floyd. Cotto has improved A LOT in terms of boxing skills. His jab, footwork and defense are very different than lets say when he fought Ricardo Torres. Floyd against Margarito will be similar i think to the Mayweather-Baldomir fight. Mayweather will potshot his way to an easy victory. Margarito hits like a mule but he has slow foot and hand speed. And his defense isnt that good. Watching him and Cintron last night i felt i was watching it in slow motion because after watching a Floyd fight Mayweather is to d**n fast compared to Margarito or Cintron. Cotto speed is also underrated. I think still Cotto-Mayweather is the ultimate battle to see but i think im going to get bashed here i think Floyd will decision Cotto in a great fight. But we have to be patient. We have to wait for Cotto-Margarito and Floyd to fight Oscar and possibly Hatton in England (hope not). Then Floyd will HAVE TO I THINK take on the Winner of Cotto-Margarito.

  4. Cotto wins. More complete fighter.

Floyd will mix it up with these guys when they raise their profiles and make it financially viable for him to fight them.

    Floyd beats them both.

  5. this would be a great fight. but i slightyly favor cotto because of his speed and is more technicly skilled then margarito. but this fight can go eitehr way.

and no floyd will not fight any of these guys anyways. unless the press starts calling him a fraud champion, then maybe he will be bothered by that and finaly step up.

  6. Quite a difficult one for me to try and explain my thoughts on this one as they are quite confusing. Basically i think Cotto will beat Margarito in any forthcoming fight and i think he would be the first to stop the iron chinned Margarito, if Antonio puts his chin on offer as much as he did against Cintron then i definitely see a stoppage victory as their isnt a bigger hitter in the division than Cotto. This is where it gets confusing though if you put me on the spot and asked who would fair better against Floyd i would probably say that Margarito may have the better chance of beating him, i think if he approached the fight the same way as Hatton did in the early rounds then i could see a very close fight indeed, Margarito has the stamina to go all 12 easily and has enough power to keep him honest he also has an iron chin which Floyd wouldnt make a mark on i would see this being a really close fight as long as Margarito keeps pressuring for the whole fight, he would have to take some shots on the way in obviously to make his own work count but i could see this happening. Cotto however would have his work cut out against Floyd i would say, i think Cotto would try and box with Floyd and i think that would be his downfall, i think only a pressure fighter can get anywhere near Floyd and thats only if they dont get picked apart on the way in, Cotto would have to try to turn it into a war so he could get some of his big shots off and i really dont see Floyd letting him get anywhere near him as he knows all about Cottos power also i am still a little dubious about Cottos chin and dont know whether he would be able to walk through Mayweathers slick punching to land his own, i would see this one as a points victory for Floyd if not a late stoppage.

Would just like to add though that i dont think Floyd wants any part of the two fights above though as he knows as well as everybody else does that they are the two fighters with the biggest chance of beating him and that is the last thing Floyd wants, he will go on fighting rematches against older fighters or fighters from different weight divisions and retire undefeated and claim he is the greatest of alltime when we all know he is ducking certain fights claiming that he wont get enough money for them.

  7. I think Margarito's victory over Cintron was a bit more impressive than Cotto's over Gomez.  That said, Cotto also has Shane Mosley's scalp on his belt, so the Cotto/Margarito match, rumored to be a Yankee Stadium, some time next year looks to be huge.  The welterweight division is loaded with talent, but these two seem to be the best of the group.  I too think Cotto has a slight edge, but Cotto has been known to wobble, the c***k in his armor is a questionable chin.  It is shaping up like the fight of the year in 09.  Floyd Mayweather want's nothing to do with the welterweight division, guys like Clottey, Quintana, Williams as well as the top two would give him loads of trouble.  Mayweather is like a predator, he takes the old and the weak from the herd, but leaves the young, healthy, or dangerous one's alone.  Smart? Cowardly?  Your call, but Floyd is obviously ducking the talented welterweights.

Honestly, no, I don't see Mayweather taking the risk of a decent welterweight fight with any of the above five unless he suffers some serious finacial problems in the next couple years and is forced to.  Great to see you back on the site, later bro.
