Salam for you my dear WS.I think ramadan in america should be started since yesterday monday on September 1,2008 because america lies in the western part of Saudi Arabia while in this country started yesterday too.The calculation for starting the fasting during ramadan is made by seeing the emerging moon on the west part of the sky..If the moon just can be seen although in the very small part it means  that the beginning of a  new month of ramadan  will start.

In Japan, Islamic people do not care for the Ramadan.

Like this, they do not need to follow this one when they are travelling overseas.

But they do not skip the pray even after lunch here.

Some of the sites had mentioned that Ramadan would be starting on Sept 1st in America based on astronomical calculations.

But the info we got by calling masjids in Chicago, NJ and Seattle was that since no authentic reporting of moonsighting was heard on Aug 31st, they had decided that ramadan will be starting in these places on Sept 2nd.
