i wanted to get a texturizer but the stylist said i needed a perm cuz all my hair was natural again...know that i have one my hair looks nice n it still looks healthy but im getting some new growth..i dont wanna get perms that often cuz i dont want myhair to break off again, but my sister told me that might cause my hair to break off because of the difference/ friction between my permed hair and the natueral hair... is that tru or can i just perm my hair like 3 times a year and be okay (idk wat too much chemical might do to it.)

-kinda scared

  1. Talk to your stylist, tell her you don't want chemicals to over lap.. that is what causes the breakage... when you have chemical over chemical your hair just gets too weak. Tell her you want your roots to be smooth but that breakage is not an option.. she should be able to figure something out.

  2. for black girls, aren't supposed to get perms because it damages their hair, it's really for white people with stronger roots

keep braids in and use horse shampoo for thicker and longer hair

  3. I actually have heard that before. The only way to be sure is to talk to an experienced hair stylist.  And remember, you get what you pay for.  Go to somone who knows what they are doing.

  4. Blacks aren't supposed to perm? lol. It's very common for blacks to perm their hair, it's called a "relaxer" and is different from the "perms" other races use.

Okay, it's like this. If you go to long before relaxing the new growth then this will make your hair fall out naturally because you are dealing with two different hair textures - your natural curly hair and your permed hair. You don't take care of both textures the same and the natural hair needs more moisture than the permed hair. Also, the products you use for permed hair are not always the healthiest for natural hair as they could cause build-up, dryness, and cause the natural hair to get hard.

You have to be very careful when stretching your perms (going longer than recommended before perming) because the permed hair will begin naturally breaking off at the new growth because the new growth is the strongest part of your hair. You have to take very good care of this. The technical word for this is called the line of Demarcation (I think I spelled it right). This is the line where the permed hair ends and the new growth begins. How long you can stretch your perms depends on how well you take care of it. If you want to go longer without perming then you have use protective styles like braids. The point of using protective styles is so that you can keep your hands out of your hair. Your hair is in a very fragile state with the two different textures so you don't want to manipulate it like usual by always combing, brushing, using heat, and/or harsh chemicals, doing this regularly and harshly can easily break off the permed ends.

Another option is to go natural and let your hair grow out and then you wouldn't have to worry about a perm breaking off your hair. If you decide to go natural then you will have to cut all the perm out of your hair, but you can let your hair grow out and cut off the permed ends little-by-little and when your happy about the length of your new growth then you can cut off all the permed ends. You can grow healthy and long hair in it's natural state.
