  1. Not for a long time.

The 747-8 is coming out in a few years to compete with the A380.

I think it will be around for at least another 30-40 years.

  2. They are not accepting any more orders for the -400- only for the 747-8, which has a new wing, 787 engines, and a stretched fuselage.  It will fly farther and burn a lot less fuel.

  3. NNNNNNNNNNNNEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVVVVVVVVVVVVVV...

    it has been succsessffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuullllllllll...

happy ninjas will take over the world and make everyone eat baby carrots

  4. By 2009 or 2010 when they've finished building the last trickle of freighter orders that are left. Passenger version is finished, its just some 747-400F freighter orders left now. Reference is the Boeing website. The 747 assembly line should close once Boeing starts building the 747-8.

Jetdoc is wrong though, no Airline is placing order for the 747-400 anymore, any Airline that wants a 747 sized plane would either have to go for the 747-8 or the 777-300ER.

  5. When there are too few orders to justify keeping the line open or when an improved model takes its place.

  6. Boeing has stopped building the 747 but they still have some freighter orders to fill.  The model is being replaced by the 747-8.  The -8 is used because much of the new model will have the same systems as the 787 and a very similar wing. Here's Boeing's well don web page about the new type.

  7. Orders for new aircraft are made, often, years in advance of expected delivery.  747's are by no means obsolete.  They are still one of the biggest aircrafts in the sky and one of the most versatile.  The 747 is a massive four engine aircraft which makes it ideal for use in commericial (passenger/cargo), military/government, science (NASA shuttle transport, etc).

747's are essentially shells and can be fitted with all the latest technology and engine designs are they become available.  And of coures, as others have said, as long as orders come in, Boeing will keep building them.

  8. One of our associates who is a transportation buff said the 747 400 is in demand. We checked the Boeing Web site too and they are touting further new improvements of the 747 400.  When Boeing decided not to build a super jumbo like the Airbus 380, the continued sales of the 747 400 were guaranteed, our transportation buff says. The 747 uses about the same amount of fuel per seat mile as the A 380, so airlines that need 350 to 450 seats and not 500 or more will buy the 747 400. 9. They are still taking orders for new 747s and companies are still buying them.  I imagine that when they have no more orders for new ones, they'll stop building them.
