Wenger Puzzled Over Fabregas’ Injury
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is puzzled by his captain Cesc Fabregas’ latest hamstring injury, which will keep out the Spanish international for about two to three weeks. The young captain limped off during the Champions League 2-0 defeat to Braga in midweek.
Because of the unexpected set back the Gunners have not been able to secure their progress to the knock out stages of the European competition.
The French manager is concerned about the injury because apparently there is no logical reason behind the Arsenal stars injury. The Arsenal boss said that he was hopeful that the injury would not become a regular hamstring injury, like Michael Owen and Ryan
Giggs have been suffering. The latter two have not been consistent over the past season and still have not made a return.
Wenger said while speaking to reporters in a press conference, he revealed how Fabregas had insisted he was fit but he had to make a decision to rest him. He said,
“We had a chat before the game on Tuesday and he felt perfectly all right. All the data we had was positive so it's difficult to say to a player 'I know you're fit, I know you feel good, but you don't play.”
Wenger was concerned about his star player and said that he was under a lot of pressure, which was affecting his performance. He added,
“He has more on his shoulders than before. There is pressure to deliver, pressure of being captain. I don't know if that has an influence. It's difficult as you can have psychological or physical reasons. He wants to play football and he feels responsibility
to win things.”
The Arsenal manager said that the Spaniard had gone through tests and no problems have been discovered as yet. He continued,
“We have analysed his body and it's not fatigued. So where does the problem come from? From his back or because he is naturally not flexible? We are investigating as much as we can. I'll do what is right for him and for the club but I will listen of course
to medical people.”
Wenger added that the Arsenal captain was not the type of player who suffered from hamstring injuries, he said,
“Usually people exposed to hamstring injuries are sprinters like Michael Owen and Ryan Giggs. Cesc is a ball-giver, more a stamina player and that's what puzzles me. It could be an explanation but then Cesc should have been injured before. Why now?”
