Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was frustrated by his team’s 1-1 draw against Southampton last night, and admits that his team didn’t deserve anything more from the game after their dismal performance.
Fresh from a 7-3 victory against Newcastle United, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 failed to impress last night against a strong and determined Southampton side.
Having gone a goal down, the visitors never looked likely to cause Southampton any problems. They had started the game brightly, but had trouble containing the hosts as the Saints took the game to Arsenal.
The Saints took the lead in the first half when Gaston Ramirez fired the home side in front just past the half-hour mark. The goal had resulted when Arsenal failed to clear their lines, and ended up paying for it.
Despite having 0 shots on target, Arsenal got the equalizer when http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Theo-Walcott-c34873 struck a free kick home which deflected off Guly Do Prado to make it 1-1. The own goal was perhaps a bit harsh on the home side, who had been bright and promising in the first
half.
The second half saw more of the same, but a bit more end to end football as both teams started pressing for the winner. However, the game ended 1-1, and Arsenal failed to close the gap for the 4th spot.
Wenger was very unhappy with his side’s lack of penetration against Southampton, and admitted that his team did not deserve anything more from the game.
The manager bemoaned his side’s lack of urgency and creativity, but was quick to admit that the draw was a fair result against a defensively solid Southampton team. Speaking to reporters, he said:
“Considering our performance I don’t think we deserved more today. It’s two points lost if you look at the target we had over Christmas. We were not very good. Offensively we didn’t create enough. I felt we lacked sharpness and desire really to get in the
box and create what we can do.”
“It’s frustrating and disappointing because we didn’t create a lot today after having scored five at Reading and seven against Newcastle. Our game lacked purpose, lacked penetration and lacked speed, all qualities we usually have.”
