Wenqing Zhang seizes Women’s 200m IM gold – 2012 Chinese National Swimming Championships
Wenqing Zhang of Shandong seized gold medal of the Women’s 200m Individual Medley (IM) on third day of the 2012 Chinese National Long Course Swimming Championship in Huangshan, Anhui Province on Tuesday, September 25.
Zhang stifled hopes of her challengers in the four-lap IM discipline as she proved her eligibility for the crown. She continued her nerve-wrecking form in the race from the start and overpowered her challengers in a comfortable manner.
Zhang enjoyed a lead almost half body length over her following swimmer and surfaced on the finishing wall as the champion by producing a wonderful time of 2 minutes and 13.24 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Xinyi Chen of Shanghai, who stayed 0.74 seconds away from upsetting her former finisher and surfaced on the wall with a splendid effort of 2 minutes and 13.98 seconds.
The second position holder was followed by Min Zhou of Shanghai, who stayed prominently behind her foregoing finisher and secured third place. Zhou remained 0.68 seconds slower from improving her position as she tapped the wall with an effort of 2 minutes
and 14.66 seconds for bronze medal.
Moments later, the crowd enjoyed exhausting efforts of Shuai Wang of Beijing in the Men’s 50m breaststroke event. Wang faced tough battle from Xiayan Li of Guangzhou Army in the single lap race but managed to secure the title.
Wang remained just an inch ahead of his following swimmer and clocked a time of 27.91 seconds for gold medal. The champion was followed by Li, who stayed only 0.10 seconds away from his former finisher and tapped the wall with an effort of 28.01 seconds
for second position.
The silver medallist was traced by Xiang Ma of Tianjin, who remained hardly a stroke away from overpowering his foregoing finisher and ended third. Ma was only 0.25 seconds behind and clocked an effort of 28.26 seconds for bronze medal.
In addition, Zhang and Wang were extremely delighted with their title claiming efforts in the final events of the session and articulated that they would work hard to achieve the same at upcoming swimming events.
