Went to the Austrian consulate today and submitted my student visa paperwork. They told me to pick it up wed.

Does this mean it was approved indefinitely? She took the original documents and handed me back the copies and gave me a post-it note with a number on it and told me to come back wednesday- I'm just nervous of something going wrong of course.

I don't know about indefinitely, but it sounds as though your student visa was approved.  If they kept your passport, that is a pretty good indication that it will come back with a  visa in it.
