  1. Get to ER ASAP! Sounds like an infection. Do not mess around!

  2. Sometimes, a doc can order a medication to give through the IV that 'burns' the vein, i.e. phenergan. But when the vein turns red, becomes firm to the touch and/or seems to 'pop-up' a little, this can be a sign that infection was introduced to the IV at some point. Taking an anti-inflammatory such as aleve or advil can help with this. Also using a moist, cold compress can help with pain and swelling. If you develop a fever, chills, or if the site becomes more inflamed or spreads to a larger area, it would be wise to go back to your doc's asap to have them evaluate the possible infection.

  3. is the iv still in? If so, then the vein burst and it needs to come out ASAP!

  4. You need to go to the ER.  asap

  5. Before rushing to the ER why not call the doctor who put the iv in and ask why this happened? I'm no expert, but any redness or swelling from an injection or insertion of an iv is cause for concern and is something a doctor should look at. Maybe they'll put you on an antibiotic. Whatever a doctor does to treat this shouldn't be a major procedure.
