The German under-20 international expressed his desire to play in the Bundesliga.
The 20-year old Kazakhstan-born German youth international, who plays for Serie A side Genoa, has been linked with a move to Germany. The youngster started his youth career in Germany. In 2008 he joined AC Milan’s youth academy,
where he featured in the Under-20 side that won the Coppa Italia Primavera. The midfielder made 6 appearances for the Milan club, and was offloaded to Genoa in 2011-2012 as part of a co-ownership deal with the Rossoneri.
The Rossoblu bought the remaining half of Alexander Merkel’s contract in 2012. The midfielder was sent on loaned to Milan and returned to Genoa when they nearly dodged relegation to Serie B.
The German is now being linked with a switch to Bundesliga, with Werder Bremen now understood to be chasing his signature. The attacking midfielder thinks highly of the club who he believes are a top club with a rich history. A
lthough the club have been under achieving for a couple of years but they are capable of competing for top honours like they have always been.
“Werder are a great club, a club with tradition. With the exclusion of the last two seasons, they have always been fighting at the top.”
The former Ac Milan reserve player is interested in a move to Germany, whom he has represented on youth level. He admits to have a strong liking towards the German league which has some of the most attractive stadiums and passionate
fans.
“Of course that Bundesliga is an option. The league has become more attractive. Full stadiums, great atmosphere, what more could you want?” he is quoted as saying in an interview.
Alexander Merkel will be available for a relatively low price, as he has not featured regularly for Genoa this season.
Werder Bremen are thought to be in the market for an attacking midfielder and a striker after the departures of Marko Marin and Claudio Pizarro, to Chelsea and Bayern Munich respectively. The club need reinforcements in this transfer
window or they will lag behind the likes of Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Schalke 04.
