Werder Bremen coach pleased with point against Tottenham Hotspur
Werder Bremen head coach Thomas Schaaf has revealed he is pleased that his side came back to pick up a point against English Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur in the teams’ UEFA Champions League group stage match.
Spurs had raced into a 2-0 lead after just 20 minutes of action by means of a goal by Petri Pasanen, and a strike by Peter Crouch. But the home team pulled themselves back into proceedings when Hugo Almeida and Marko Marin netted on either side of half-time
to restore parity. Bremen tapped into their fighting spirit to hold on and claim a valuable point as they bid to progress to the knockout stages of the tournament.
Schaaf was delighted by the comeback and told UEFA’s official website that, "I was annoyed by many things-we were too passive. Everything that was good about Saturday in Munich (when Bremen drew 0-0 with Bayern in the Bundesliga) was gone. We allowed (Spurs)
to play like that; we just allowed them to play their own game and were punished. I cannot understand the inertia.”
"You could see that Tottenham had to respond once we put some pressure on them. We did not get into the match. We waited and waited to see what they would do. We intended to put pressure on them and seize the initiative, to take command, but we failed. We let
them attack and we let them play in midfield. In the end we can be happy to have come from behind, although we could have won it in the end."
Bremen have had a strong history in European competition, having won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in the 1991-92 season as well as the Intertoto Cup in 1998. They have never won the Champions League.
