Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker has rued missed opportunities against Bayer Leverkusen and regretted the mistakes which led to the team’s 1-0 loss in the Bundesliga. He insisted that Bayer have a great team and have a lot
of quality players but added that Bremen could have won the clash.

of the season.
Mertesacker claimed that the team had discussed the poor form of the opposition in recent weeks but they were an improved side to play against. He expressed his disappointment on failing to capitalize on the brilliant 2-0 win against
FC Kaiserslautern.
“We talked a lot before the match about how Leverkusen had had a difficult start to the season, but Bayer still have an excellent team at their disposal. However, we wanted to hold them off as best we could, whilst capitalising
on what we had done well against Kaiserslautern,” he was quoted as saying in an interview.
The captain admitted that he is impressed with his side’s performances since the start of the season barring the first round loss in the DFB Pokal. He claimed that the side also played well against Werkself but were eventually
unlucky to be on the losing side.
However, the defender added that there are a lot of positives from the defeat and hoped that the players learn from their mistakes and do not repeat them again.
“It's clear to see that we're working well together, even though we've only been playing with this line-up for a short amount of time. We can still take a lot of positives from the match despite the fact that we lost,” he concluded.
Werder Bremen suffered a shock exit from the German Cup after losing 2-1 to third division side FC Heidenheim. Die Werderaner have been poor in the competition for some time now as they lost in the second round to Bayern Munich
last year and faced an early exit.
