Werder Bremen blames collective performance for Tottenham defeat
Werder Bremen manager Thomas Schaaf confirmed that his side made too many simple mistakes in their 3–0 defeat to Tottenham on Wednesday 24 November.
Bremen, who had two points going into the game and were in with a minuscule chance of qualifying for the knock-out stages, had not won any of their previous six fixtures. Goals from Younes Kaboul, Luka Modric and Peter Crouch saw them undone
at White Hart Lane.
"We have to keep on working, but at the moment we cannot make big improvements, only small ones," Schaaf told
UEFA.com, refusing to single out any players for under-performing.
"We still make too many mistakes at the back. We should not pick out any individuals when we come to the result, because we made too many errors as a team. We have to try to get out of this situation."
Bremen, who are 11th in the Bundesliga with 15 points from 13 games, could qualify for the UEFA Cup by beating Inter Milan in the next round, but their doing so is dependent on FC Twente also losing their last game against Tottenham by a
sizable margin.
Schaaf, who has been in charge of Bremen since 1999, added that Bremen could draw some positive things from Wednesday's defeat.
"Of course, the result is not good, we wanted a different one, but there were also good things like the performance of Dominik Schmidt at left-back," he said, despite the 23-year-old defender getting beaten for pace by Aaron Lennon for Tottenham's
first goal.
"Furthermore, we had a phase in the first half where we were quite solid in defence. We defended quite well, but we had lots of problems going forward because we were not able to create any pressure."
Bremen play their next game against FC St. Pauli on Sunday 28 November.
