Werder Bremen pair disappointed with early cup exit
Werder Bremen striker Claudio Pizarro and Klaus Allofs, sporting director at the club, were both disappointed with their team's defeat to Bayern Munich on Tuesday, 27 October.
Bremen were in the game courtesy of Pizarro's early strike, but Bastian Schweinsteiger's 74th-minute goal, his second of the night, was enough to hand the 2009 cup champions an early exit in their hunt for another DFB-Pokal title.
After the break, Bremen dominated proceedings before Bayern's second goal took the steam out of Thomas Schaaf's men.
Pizarro, who played for Bayern between 2001 and 2007, said Bremen were too wasteful in front of goal during the game.
"We had so many opportunities, but football is just like that. If you don’t use your chances up front, then you get one in the back," the striker told his club's official website. "We are very sad that we will not be in Berlin for this season's final, but
now we have to concentrate on the other competitions."
Allofs: Bremen lacked defensive concentration
One particular disappointment for Bremen was their defensive mishap at Bayern's second goal, as Schweinsteiger was given too much time on the ball to unleash his long-range strike.
It was a rare defensive slip from Bremen, who have gone undefeated in the Bundesliga since suffering a 4–1 defeat at Hannover 96 on 21 September. After the game, Allofs said his team's concentration had failed them in the second half.
"This is a defeat that really hurts. The lead did not do us much good. Maybe you think that you lead and you concentrate on managing things and give the opponents too much space. We talked about just that at half-time, but it didn't help us out."
Bremen, who host FC Nuremberg in the league on Saturday, 30 October, are currently eighth in the table with 14 points from nine games.
