Werder Bremen’s Klaus Allofs expects another difficult season after German Cup exit
Werder Bremen Sporting Director Klaus Allofs is expecting another difficult season for the club. He claimed that the team’s early exit from the German Cup means more financial worries and admitted that the club could be done in
this transfer window.
Die Werderaner suffered a shock defeat in the first round of the DFB Pokal against third division side FC Heidenheim. They lost 2-1 and have been knocked out of the competition.
Bremen had a poor season last term and ended the season in 13th place with 41 points. The River Islanders won only tem of the 34 matches played and lost a staggering 13 times in the Bundesliga. The club failed to qualify
for Europe and in the end avoided relegation with some good results in the last few games.
Allofs revealed that the upcoming season could again be a difficult one for the cash stripped club. He claimed that many of the teams in the League have strengthened in this transfer market and the next season will be a really
competitive one.
“We know we face another difficult season. The Bundesliga is cruel. There are only two possibilities: either you are playing for a place in Europe or battling against relegation. We weren't on the safe side last season, everyone
saw that,” he was quoted as saying in an interview.
The Sporting Director admitted that the club is facing financial worries and insisted that the side could wells be done in the transfer market this summer. He stated that Werder has always spent the money from what it has earned
and wants to handle the current situation with ease so that the targets could be achieved.
“The philosophy has always been at Werder that we only want to spend the money that we make. We have worked over the years with a team playing in the Champions League, but maybe now we need to be a bit more modest,” he concluded.
Werder Bremen will kick start their season against FC Kaiserslautern on Saturday, August 6, at the Weserstadion in Bremen.
