Werder Bremen defender, Per Mertesacker, has revealed the club’s need to sign some new and fit players for the coming 2011/12 season. He believes that the club were short on players last season as there were a lot of injuries and the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Defence-c38904 showed some
deficiencies which certainly need to be sorted out prior to entering the new season.
The player himself was injured during the last part of the 2010/11 season which forced the manager, Thomas Schaaf, to reconsider his defensive options. Bremen finished last season 13th on the league table, and club officials blame the defence
for the team’s inability to perform up to the expectations.
Mertesacker revealed that Bremen need to recruit some fresh and fit faces sooner than later in order to stand any chance of presenting a challenging during the coming season. The German international also pointed towards the appointment of former Manchester
United man, Mikael Silvestre, and former Schalke defender, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lukas-Schmitz-c22900, who were also not able to take any part in training, being unfit.
The 26-year-old accused Bremen officials of not considering the fitness of the players before employing them at Weserstadion for the upcoming season. He added that Bremen need to acquire top quality defenders in order to have a complete grip on their game,
otherwise the club might find themselves at the same spot where they finished last season.
The former Hannover player further added, ''We are totally understaffed, simply because we have too many injuries. I would be pleased if we brought in fit players.”
Mertesacker tied knots with the River Islanders in 2006 and has managed 142 league appearances until now, bagging 12 goals during the process. Previously he spent three years at Hannover and squeezed in 74 league appearances, netting seven goals in return.
He made his international debut in 2004 for the German national side and has appeared 75 times, scoring a solitary goal for Die Mannschaft.
Bremen will host 1. FC Kaiserslautern in their opening game of the new season on Saturday, Aug 6.
