Werder Bremen’s Per Mertesacker wants to test his skills in England – Bundesliga news
Werder Bremen centre back http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Per-Mertesacker-c29680 has expressed desire to test his skills in the English Premier League. The player was recently made available for a transfer by his club in spite of the fact that the defender’s contract is to end at the conclusion
of the 2011/12 season.
Mertesacker at first was unhappy over the stance taken by Bremen but then agreed upon making a transfer, being well aware of the club’s poor financial condition. He was a part of Bremen’s 2-0 victory over FC Kaiserslautern in the opening game of this year’s
campaign.
The club’s sporting director Klaus Allofs mentioned that it would be hard to let the defender go but that’s the only option available at the moment. He admitted that Mertesacker has been treated harshly especially as he served the River Islanders for five
years and is still going strong.
Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf was all praise for the giant defender and had all the sympathies with the 26-year-old. He also wished him best of luck for his new journey and hoped that the defender gets a chance to play in the English Premier League.
It has been reported that the defender is on Arsenal’s radar and Arsene Wenger’s side could soon make a bid for the centre back. Bremen officials have already made themselves available for any offers and it is likely that Mertesacker could get his wish fulfilled.
The premier league season is set to get underway in four days time.
In an interview to a local website, the towering defender enthused, "For a national player it is a good thing to get experience playing abroad. I have said that http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 excites me."
Mertesacker joined the Green-Whites in 2006 and has 142 league games under his belt until now, bagging 12 goals in return. Last season, the player made 29 Bundesliga appearances for his side, scoring twice during the process. He previously represented Hannover
96 for three years (2003-2006) and had seven goals to show from his 74 league matches. The defender has 75 international caps to his name so far for the German national side since making his debut in 2004.
