  1. I wasnt a fan but I didnt hate him the way some did he was a great driver and deserved everything he won

  2. I warmed up to him when he drove for Hendrick Motorsports with the Tide logo on his car.   This was in 1986.

After Davey Allison died I gave up NASCAR for awhile  because DW started to suck and also because of the dirty driving of a certain driver.  Can you guess who that was?

  3. Been a fan of D.W. from back in the short track days.He use to come down from Franklin/Nashville Tennessee to race with the Allisons,Red Farmer,Neil Bonnett , on the short track in Birmingham

Followed him and his ways all thru his career.

Wish he could have won more championships.

  4. My dad didn't like him , thought he was a rich boy , he liked the hard nosed nascar guys , like Cale Yarborough

  5. He was before my time but he is OK as a announcer.

  6. i wasnt alive during his racing years, was he like juan?

  7. I remember him in the #17 Western Auto car as well. He started the first wreck ever at Texas Motor Speedway in turn 1 on lap 1. He was a good driver, him and Rusty had quite the rivalry.

  8. I guess I was edgy on him right up to the point of him trying to do the Iggy Shuffle and spike his helmet and fail at BOTH ,I cringe every time they replay that , I followed him mostly because of Jr (Johnson that is).

  9. Back in the day??..  Few people liked him here, in Atlanta !!!

  10. YES, I was (I was #11 for little league, and then #17 in high school).  Now, it makes me angry that he worships the almighty yen.

  11. I'm 49 my wife is 47 so we watched his whole career he was my wife's favorite from start to finish now her favorite is Micheal i guess she just likes the waltrips

  12. i wasn't a nascar-fanatic while DW was racing.  i probably would have liked him though - i remember watching him race on tv now and again, but i wasn't that into it back then.

  13. Being a fellow Tennessean, yes.  Anyone old enough to remember can tell you he was either loved or hated.  He loved, and still loves to talk, hence the nickname "Jaws".  He loved to incite the haters, too.  Remind you of any current drivers?

  14. No, but I am also pretty young to be a big fan of his.  I was in high school when he ran his last Cup race and his last few years were nothing to write home about.  When I was little I liked Ricky Rudd and Bill Elliott.  I don't really remember DW even racing that well.  Selective memory perhaps.  I don't know.  I didn't dislike him though.

  15. Yes I was a fan of DW..then Dale Sr arrived on the scene and that was that..fell in love ...lol....they were fierce competitors and my favorite quite from DW was "He--, was trying to KILL ME???..lol..Dale just smiled that million dollar smile and stated.."that's just racing......I do not want to kill him, just rattle his cage"...that was one one Dale Sr's most famous quotes..lol, he used it on many occassions and it stuck

  16. When I started paying attention to him he was in the Western Auto #17 car and at the tail end of his career. So he was past his prime. My dad always said he had a big mouth though, and it's true lol...

I remember around 2000 though he was gonna run a truck schedule and I was pulling for him and I think he actually did pretty good at Martinsville so that was neat. I think he's a pretty good guy.

  17. I didn't like him when he first came on the scene.  He would literally run over anybody & everybody.  Cale Yarborough nick-named him "Jaws" because of his mouth.  I remember Richard Petty doing an interview after he was wrecked by Waltrip years ago & the interviewer asked Petty whose fault was the wreck, and Petty responded, "It was my fault, I should have known better than to try to run beside Waltrip."

Of course Waltrip was just like Earnhardt, Earnhardt's timing was better as far as the year he started racing.  If Waltrip, Yarborough, & Earnhardt had all been in their prime at the same time, Earnhardt would have just been another brick in the wall.

As Waltrip got more mature under the leadership of Junior Johnson, he became more tolerable.  But his commutating is awful.  I turn the TV down & turn on the radio so I don't have to listen to his awful, awful comments.
