All of the bike shops are a similar size and have access to the same kinds of warehouse specials. I got a great deal 1 year ago at Fitzroy Cycles, Fitzroy -- the bike was less than half the original price because it had been sitting in the warehouse for a couple of years. Just check around all the shops, ask what their specials are (this is the best time of year for it) and eventually you'll find something. Also, check out the forums at http://www.bv.com.au/forums/ for good advice on the kind of bike that will be right for the riding you want to do. Good luck!
