It is hard to find tickets at a low price because the price of fuel is so high.  However airlines do run specials.  Go to their website and see what you can find.  

Another trick I learned is to book vacation packages which include airfare and hotel.  Sometimes these packages are cheaper than just buying an airline ticket.   If you don't want to use the hotel, don't show up.

you're not going to find a whole lot of cheap airfares right now- the cost of fuel and the recent bankruptcies are hurting the airline industry and prices have to be increased to make it profitable for them to run their business

that being said- use a mega search engine like www.Sidestep.com to find the most affordable prices

be flexible in when you can fly and check nearby airports to find the best prices
