  1. According to the picture they lead nowhere. The short long thing is Greek architecture

  2. You are right, they lead to the site of the original Jewish temple.  the stairs are made that way for an easier ascent.  The temple mount used to be the highest place in the city, but as you can see, many layers of city have been built on top of it.

  3. You've answered your own question. They lead to the Temple Mount. It was a different entrance. The picture doesn't show it, but at the top of the steps, embedded in the stone wall, there is the outline of a doorway that has been filled in. This way, anyone coming from any direction would be able to ascend the Temple Mount and come closer to G-d.

And the steps all look the same size to me... I don't know what you mean, one short and one long.

Edit: As far as I know, they just lead up to the wall - which was around the Temple Mount. The Al-Aqsa mosque is at the site of the Holy Temple.

  4. They used to lead to the Temple Mount, now most are under the El Aqsa, look at this map, were it says B - Staircase to Basement, these steps are going under the El Aqsa leading to Hulda Gates.

One short one long, these steps can't be climbed fast,

    a short = one stride

    a long = stride and a half

you must climb slow, I did, climb slow respecting the holy site of the TEMPLE.

  5. they lead back to Germany.
