  1. Ancestry.com gives the following information about Poutre:  "French:  apparently from medieval French poutre 'young mare', 'filly', though the reasons for its adoption as a surname are unclear.  It is found chiefly in Vermont."

    Again, according to Ancestry.com,  in the United States, between six to nine Poutre families lived in Kansas, Illinois, New York, and New Jersey in 1920.  The ports of departure for Poutres arriving in New York were Boulogne Sur Mer, France, and Rotterdam, the Netherlands.  In 1891, three out of the six Poutre families living in the United Kingdom lived in Essex.
