"it is our manifest destiny to overspread and to possess the whole of the continent which providence has given us for the development of the great experiment of liberty." - written in 1845 by john o'sullivan, editor of the new york morning post.
does this 1845 idea of 'possession' of land still have some impact upon the way we manage the environment in the usa today? has it outgrown its usefulness or do some still subscribe to the idea of manifest destiny in 2007?
the bible states: "God blessed them, and God said unto them, be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the fowl of the air and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth." (genesis 1:27-29)
these verses urge dominion and replenishment of the world. people certainly still take the bible literally. how does this commandment compare with manifest destiny in its view of man's role in nature? does either view come close to yours?
