Were going to Sosua and Cabarete on September 3rd-8th. do you think we will be able to surf?

we're beginners and really enjoy surfing. we're also staying in Playa Dorada so it shouldn't be a problem to get to Sosua and Cabarete. is there places to rent boards? how much? any good locations for beginners?

You just walk out of the Playa Doraga compound and take the "guagua" to Cabarete (45/50 pesos p.p.) and once there on the main road (left side), you will find enough places where you can rent boards. Hope you will enjoy it!
