  1. are you joking? its not windows, you don't need virus protection, that's one of the great things about linux.

people don't understand you can have an operating system that doesn't get plagued with viruses and crashes all the time because they believe it has to be that way and windows is the only answer, but its not!

don't worry about virus protection on ubuntu

  2. You don't need it, but you do need to enable the firewall for Ubuntu., its called (Firestarter)., Good luck.

  3. You could read this first. http://www.linux.com/feature/60208

Then, if you are still worried, try Panda Antivirus for Linux, or Clam Antivirus.

  4. Clam AV is the best.

Recently, I use the Windows version ClamWin to find virus samples for Symantec because my company's Symantec Antivirus cannot detect new viruses.

  5. Don't really need it...?  The "Linux is safe" continually becomes a misnomer as people take that attitude.  After all, if you did have a virus you probably wouldn't even know it...

Use Synaptic Package manager (under system -> administration) and search for antivirus.  With Ubuntu your best bet is to always use what they have in their repositories to make sure everything stays up to date.

Go to a bookstore and pick up some magazines on Linux.  IT professionals will starkly disagree with the blogs and forums of the internet.  You'd be hard pressed to find anyone who actually knows Linux and says there's no viruses.
