  4. The underground rail roads are in upstate, NY  and farther up through Canada. Some of my friends have tunnels in their basements that lend to the underground rail roads. They were used by the slaves. For hiding as well, from police or other authority trying to take them. Whites would hide them in secret places. It is amazing to hear about the stories, I can't imagine being so scared like that. People should never live in fear, even to this day!

  6. The underground railroad was not an actual railway, but instead a number of places where slaves could safely move to on their journey to the freedom of the Northern States.  Many were basements of homes or businesses, which is why the term "Underground" was coined.

  8. Not really underground and not really a railroad. It was a network of safe houses, trails, wagons and boats that were used to help escaped slaves flee to the north - usually to Canada.

    My own great-great grandfather was a steamboat captain who formed part of the underground railway, hiding men and women on his ship as he sailed north up the Mississippi.
