  1. Depends on your state.  Usually there are special rules for military people though.  You can go to your local dmv web site for both states and see.  You can reside somewhere else and still have license plates from where you actually live, which would be CA. because you are "stationed" in KY doesn't mean you actually live there.  Just do yourself a favor and check out the websites to make sure.  Good luck.

  2. Insurance companies are on the hood no matter where you move and even if you forget to tell them that you have moved.

But KY rates are lower.  Why not move your insurance out there.  I am in CA  where rates are high.

  3. Federal law doesn't regulate insurance, state law does.

If you want CA tags and CA inspection on your car, you need CA insurance and CA licenses.  If you want KY tags and inspection, you need KY insurance.

But on average, CA is going to cost more than KY, so I have no idea why you'd want to leave it CA.

OTOH, you probably should buy your car insurance from USAA, and discuss the issue with them.  They are absolutely the MOST FLEXIBLE when it comes to insurance issues and active military.

  4. Your agent is correct... your car insurance policy is priced and rated according to the physical location of the car.  Get GEICO, they have the absolute best rates for active duty military hands down, and they will cover you nationwide, but if you're in a location for more than 6 weeks you have to call and tell them so your policy can be updated and changed.

The rates vary wildly between urban and rural, east coast and west coast, you probably will be paying a lot less for KY then CA!  :)

AND, most important, if you have an accident where you are now, they're not on the hook to pay any claim because you've not reported your new location to them.  Take care of it today!

Thanks for serving, our vets don't hear that often enough.
