  1. My gut instinct is to say Governors which was certainly true in the 20th and 21st century. The reason is because Governors have more critical executive experience. Actually Palin has more relevant experience than the other 3 candidates combined.

  2. Recently - Governors.  Bush, Clinton, Carter and Reagan come to mind.  Thats 28 of the last 32 years.

  3. More governors.  There hasn't been a senator as president since JFK.

  4. Most vice-presidents have been senators or representatives, though most recent presidents were governors.

    2001-2008 G.W.Bush [governor]/Cheney [former senator]

    1993-2001 Clinton [governor]/Gore [senator]

    1989-1993 G.H.W. Bush [former rep.]/Quayle [senator]

1981-1989 Reagan [former governor]/G.H.W. Bush [former rep.]

    1977-1981 Carter [governor]/Mondale [senator]

    1974-1977 Ford [representative]/Rockefeller [governor]

    1969-1974 Nixon [former senator]/Agnew [governor]-Ford [rep]

    1963-1969 Johnson [senator]/Humphrey [from 1965-senator]

The last time both the president and the vice-president were former senators was in 1969, just before LBJ left office.

    >"smartipants" The last president to have been a US senator was Richard Nixon.  Kennedy was the last president to be elected straight from the US Senate.

  5. I know the trend of Governors  winning the election for President started with Jimmy Carter.  There was not precedent prior to that.  The nation was tired of the Nixon Watergate scandal.

    Governors that became President:

    Jimmy Carter

    Ronald Reagan

    Bill Clinton

    George W. Bush
