Were republicans offended when McCain made the Clelsea Clinton joke in 1998?

I remember when he said this... I also remember his apology (to be fair).

A candidate knows the stakes and they all know that their families will be looked at with a microscope.  ALL of them know this... if you can't take the heat then don't get in the kitchen.

It is unfair but it is what it is and they ALL know this.  I have no sympathy for a candidate (I do have sympathy for their children) because they do know this... ambition always comes with a price.

i was not aware of any such 'joke' and would have condemned then, as i do now.

however, a hand delivered heartfelt letter of apology and the sincere vow (since borne out) to never repeat that ugly behavior, counts as lesson learned. thank heavens.

i actually don't see where McCain made judgements on Clinton's fitness to be Prez on what his daughter looked like or did.

No they weren't.

McCain for some reason is allowed to 'joke' about stuff.....bombing countries, killing them with cigarettes, entering your wife in a topless pageant, rape, etc.

I always wondered why Chelsea was/is so homely. I don't like Bill/Hilary, but they are physically decent-looking folks. Janer Reno's involvement explains it all!

Offended?  No.  The Clintons begged for the spotlight and they got it, and everything that goes with it.

Was I shocked he made that comment?  Yeah.  He should know better.
