Actually, it's both.  During some of their track refurbishments over the last 15 years or so, some areas were taken all the way down to the original 1909 crushed ash surface to try and eliminate the weepers IMS had after rainstorms.  All of those layers created places for the water to collect and then be pushed back up to the top.

    FWIW, the "Yard of Bricks" is no longer a connection of the original brick surface.  During their last paving, the YOB was removed and the hole created was paved over.  Then, a new crevice was cut into the asphalt and warehouse stored original bricks (many which were removed and stored in the previously mentioned refurbishments) were installed as the new YOB.

  3. They paved over it. At the start/finish line a yard of bricks is still exposed.
