  1. They grew crops.  Animal husbandry possibilities were severely circumscribed by the complete absence of native mammals (apart from 2 species of bats).  There were humungous birds called moas, but they were tough to domesticate and they hunted them to extinction.

  2. they were a bit of both, they grew mostly a sweet potato called Kumera, but they were also hunter gathers, and fishermen.  As New Zealand has no mamels, the diet was mainly birds, seafood, with the occiasional dog or rat for red meat.

  3. They didn't grow fruit, but they did collect berries from trees and bushes. New Zealand doesn't have much in the way of fruit plants. They did plant karaka trees which have a large fruit on them, though it was the nut inside that they were growing the trees for.

They also grew taro and kumara. Greens generally came from the forest but I'm sure they also planted vegetables like sow thistle.

Generally what they did was live in an area for several seasons and then when they had used up the local resources they would move to another area. They would rotate through several areas so that by the time they got back to where they had started the resources would have replenished themselves (classic hunter gatherer behaviour). But they also grew gardens and had settlements built up which they left vaccant when they moved on.
