Were there actually 'brown belts' competing at the U.S. Olympic Trials for Judo?

  1. Yes. The Olympic Trials were based on points earned at E-level and above tournaments, not on rank. If a brown belt earned the points to qualify, they were invited.

    It happened mostly in lower female weight divisions where you would expect more teenage competitors, and in divisions where the weight category was not qualified for the Olympics. Many of the people in the top 8 declined to compete in the Trials if there division wasn't qualified (or moved to compete in other divisions that did qualify and they were in the top 8), which moved others up into the available slots.
