    There was a device called a camera obscura that could project a view of the outside world onto a wall but there was no way to record an image photographically, it was just a clever scientific device. Though I read that some painters may have used them to get perspectives right.

    Johann Zahn built one in 1685

    Cameras would not be commonly available until more than a century later, though.

    And it depends on what you mean by "camera".  The "Camera Obscura" was invented in the Middle East in the 11th century.
