Were they making fun of me?

Question

I went to a wedding last weekend and was asked about it when I went back to work. When I was asked about the song the bride and groom danced to, I paused for at least a minute or so, trying to think of it so there was a lot of silence after the question was asked. Since nothing was coming to mind, I looked up and quietly said apologetically, "I don't remember...." After that, the person started smiling at me.

Were they making fun of me you think?

no they weren't..I wouldn't have remembered either...

It was probably just a sign to show their sympathy at not being able to remember, because they (and everyone else, for that matter) have been in that situation before. Smiling in a situations like yours often signal "it's okay, I understand"

no, they weren't. that happend to me a couple monthe ago. later i asked the person what was up with the smiling and he told me that it was sweet trying to remember the song they danced to even though he KNEW i didn't know what in good griff song it was or who sang it
