  1. They were probably common, but is was mostly an "underground" activity.  There were commonly known herbs and potions that would produce an abortion, but often it also killed the woman.  Some women thought that was better than showing a pregnancy (either because they were supposed to be virgins, they were raped, or they already had too many children).

  2. It wasn't illegal. What they would do was take a herb that is similar to the medicine found in birth control these days. Or, a few hundred years later: go to a back alley and use a wire hanger to kill the baby. im serious!

  3. not with the d**n rebublicans in the senate and house trying to stop all the fetus killing

  4. Allowed, not so much. But there were things (herbs, etc) used to induce abortion. Abandonment or outright killing of unwanted infants after birth wasn't unheard of either.

  5. They were allowed if there was no family interferance.

But it wasn't pretty because they tried doing it themselves which often resulted in their own demise.

  6. I would say so. Childbirth was dangerous back then, so i guess an abortion would be too.
