  1. It depends on you. Hotels in Mestre are much cheaper than in the historical centre, but Mestre is not beautiful. If you want to save a little money, Mestre is better, if you want (just one night, after all) to enjoy the atmosphere of Venice also leaning out of the window of your room and looking around, you should choose the centre.

The train from Mestre to Santa Lucia is cheap, however the vaporetto is very expensive. From Santa Lucia to San Marco you could walk: it is not far and crossing Venice, including the not-touristic quarters near Santa Lucia, could be an amazing experience.

  2. It depends on many things. How do you travel? By car, train, plain or somehow else? How much luggage do you have? How much money can you spend? What are your points of interest?

Remember one thing: Venice is very expensive, but truly worth seeing. If all you have is only two days in Serenissima, I'm sorry for you but that's still better than nothing;-))

If you don't have too much money, the best idea is to stay in Mestre. It's really close to Venice, the communication system is excellent and easy to use (you buy a ticket for 1.10 euros, take the bus number 12 or /12 and in about 10 minutes you are at Piazzale Roma, which is the bus station in Venice). Close to Piazzale Roma there are lots of vaporetto stops from which you can go wherever you want. Of course it's cheaper to buy a 72-hour ticket for 31 euros, which enables you to move freely around Venice but still it's possible to acquire some other options as well at the ACTV offices (like the 12-hour ticket for 14 euros).

But if you do have some money to spend then, well, you can choose from many lovely hotels, especially those situated along the Canale Grande - the views must be breathtaking. Search the internet, there are loads of offers, not cheap ones, though;-))

So, the advantage of staying in Mestre is mostly economical, while staying in Venice itself will surely leave a greater impression. The question is, can you afford the latter?

  3. I suggest you stay in a hotel In Mestre. It's convenient for visiting Venice and places nearby. In regard to the tickets, I really havn't got a clue. i'd look it up online.

  4. i'd suggest you stayed in the historical centre. it might be a bit expensive but waking up in venice is definitely something worth it, it's such a beautiful place, and mestre is the typical industrial northern italy town (that you might want to avoid).

mestre - santa lucia by train should only be a couple of euros, it only takes 10 minutes to get there, and the vaporetto costs around 6 euros if i remember correctly, which might seem a lot, but you get to see the nicest part of the city from it. enjoy :)
